Last week I shared how to make a quick and easy single-serving meal of pasta with the sauce of your choice. This week, for my final segment of Dorm Eating, I will be sharing a few other ideas for meals that can easily be prepared in a dorm room. More adventurous than going to the cafeteria, but these could still be fun some night!
The Pieces
If you want to prepare foods in your dorm on a regular basis, here are some items you may want on hand. Just be aware of when they expire and how quickly you will use them!
- Hard boiled eggs. You will want to be careful with the preparation of these, as some hot pots are hard to control to the precision of a “light boil.”
- Canned meat (in a BPA-free can)
- Frozen vegetables
- Uncooked grains
- Greens
- Condiments (try making your own when you have kitchen time!)
- Herbs and spices
Soups
Most people think they need a microwave or stove to make soup, but it is actually really easy with a hot pot! You can use canned soups (read the ingredients!) or frozen soups you made earlier. If you are feeling adventurous, you could even try making a soup from scratch with vegetables, meat, and spices. It probably won’t be as good as something you could make in a full kitchen (unless you make homemade bouillon), but it is an option!
Salads
A mini fridge can easily hold enough produce to make a few salads. Add canned meat, hard boiled eggs, nuts, and some homemade dressing and you have yourself a healthy meal!
Main Dishes
Spruce up that pasta dish from last week! A hot pot can be used to cook any grain that doesn’t need to be at a simmer. Use the still hot water for some frozen vegetables, add canned meat and sauce, and enjoy. Sandwiches and lettuce wraps with fillings such as salmon salad are another option to not forget! And if you are feeling lazy, I will leave you with this intriguingly named Monkey Salad, which looks like it would make a great snack or breakfast. What kinds of meals would you like to try making in a dorm room?
