Disclaimer: I am not a doctor, and cannot diagnose, treat, or cure any disease. I am only sharing my personal testimony about recovering from a sore throat naturally.
Since I began my health journey, I have looked into a lot of ways to keep myself and my family healthy without relying on drugs full of fillers and side effects. Some things I have found are how to naturally fight a cold (plus this roundup on the same topic) and create a natural first aid kit. I also use essential oils to help support my immune system, and I have found great success with this. For example, recently I used a Protective Blend of essential oils while my husband was sick. That combined with other immune supporting activities helped me avoid what he had.
But of course we still get sick. Such as what my husband had a couple weeks ago, or the week where my husband’s throat felt raw and swollen. Taking medication isn’t always an option for us. Sometimes we catch something in a foreign country, or the cost of sick visits keeps us away from the doctor unless there is truly no other option. (Like a UTI. I would go to the doctor for a UTI so fast. I don’t care how sick I got from the antibiotics last time. Everyone has their own line, and UTIs are over mine.) We just can’t afford to pay $250+ dollars for a prescription (and that is before we even get to the pharmacy). And about half the time they say they don’t know what is wrong anyway. I apparently my body likes to get random ailments that mimic other things but aren’t. *shrugs*
So instead, when we get nasty bugs, we resort to a concoction of Oregano, a Protective Blend, and Melaleuca
Oregano is a powerful cleaning agent and contains antioxidants, both of which help support the immune system and respiratory function.
The Protective Blend is my favorite type of natural immune support. This blend of wild orange, clove bud, cinnamon, eucalyptus, and rosemary supports healthy immune function and the body’s natural antioxidant defences. Most essential oil companies sell a version of it.
Melaleuca is well known for its cleansing and immune supporting properties. It is a great choice for protecting against environmental and seasonal threats.
Natural Immune Support
So we know these oils can help with these threats that we deal with every year when school starts anew and the weather gets colder. Taking the mixture is pretty simple, too: Simply add 3 drops of Oregano, 5 drops Protective Blend, and 5 drops Melaleuca to a shot glass of water. Gargle this water and oil mix as long as you can, then swallow. The process distributed the oils onto your tonsils, where they can meet the infection at its source, but it also gets them into your body where they can support immune function systematically.
Repeat this every 1-2 hours (except while sleeping – getting enough sleep is so important when the immune system is compromised!) until symptoms subside. Then, continue to do this 3 times a day for a few days after symptoms clear up. This part is incredibly important! Similar to how doctors tell you to take antibiotics until you run out rather than when symptoms disappear, the immune system still requires the support of these oils.
On the first couple days, applying a drop of Lavender, diluted in a carrier oil, to the outside of your throat can help soothe any discomfort.
My husband and I have both used this method for natural immune support with great success. By following this protocol, we can soon be back to feeling like our old selves. It usually takes about a week, and the whole protocol cost less than $20. Quite the deal, compared to the cost for that prescription I mentioned earlier!
Neither of us experienced any side effects, which is also quite an improvement over the synthetic options that have made us both very sick in the past. However, I would still recommend eating a good amount of fermented foods along with these essential oils to help support the gut.
To make things easier for yourself, fill up a metal or glass (not plastic!) water bottle with a proportional amount of water and oils. Take large swigs out of this when it is time for your next “dose.” This allowed my husband to take these essential oils while he was at work without having to break out 3 bottles of oil and a shot glass every hour.
If at any point you symptoms worsen or go away and come back, please see your doctor.
To sum up:
The Recipe for Natural Immune Support
- 3 drops Oregano
- 5 drops Protective Blend
- 5 drops Melaleuca
- 1 oz water
Mix and gargle as long as you can, then swallow. Repeat once every 1-2 hours until symptoms clear. Continue 3 times a day for 3-4 days after.
This stuff is pretty strong and doesn’t taste great. Just to warn you! It takes getting used to for sure.
You must only use essential oils that are safe to be ingested. Simply finding therapeutic grade essential oils is not enough, and the oils at your local health foods store will say they are not for consumption. Learn more about essential oils and which ones I trust here.

Since it has water, how long does it last in the refrigerator?
How We Flourish says
I don’t store it in water. I mix up the oils ahead of time and store them in a cool, dark place in an amber bottle. They will keep for months like this, and then I just add to water when I need it. My husband would mix some up with water to take to work, but he never made more than a days worth at a time.

Just try ed it and OMG that was so bad the taste was horrible. It made me gagg and threw up half of it. Please warn people it tastes horrible. I might try it again but I do wish I would of had a Lil waring.
How We Flourish says
Oops! Sorry! It is pretty rough. I thought I had mentioned that, but I guess I didn’t. I never noticed it tasting exceptionally bad, just a bit rough going down. I’ll add a note.

Would the results be the same by adding to a capsule and taking orally?
How We Flourish says
Yes, it would be. I like gargling when I feel it in my throat, but a capsule would work as well.

I rub these oils on the bottom of my feet with some coconut oil. Would that still work?
How We Flourish says
Yes, that will still work. The feet are great for absorbing oils!

Just read on DoTerra site that Protective blend to be used 1 drop to an 32 oz of water for internal use to treat sore throat/tonsillitis , your recommendation 5 drops to 1oz and to be repeated 1-2 hours. You haven’t had any side effects? I’m worried that it might not be safe.
How We Flourish says
I have never had any side affects from doing this. In my personal experience, I have found such a dilute amount as you shared to help with prevention, but never with getting better. But that is just my personal experience! Don’t do anything that you are not comfortable with. And what I talk about in this post should only be used for a relatively short period of time.

I’m breastfeeding do you think this concoction will be ok to do still?
How We Flourish says
I think it would be too strong for breastfeeding. I know you have to be more careful with essential oils during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

thank you for sharing your personal expierence!Cause you are in this procces longer than me, any be you know or faced some allergic reactions? thank you before!
How We Flourish says
Neither my husband nor I have ever had a reaction, but of course that doesn’t mean it’s not possible.
