Last summer I talked about finding a natural sunscreen for my poor Irish skin. I still love my Goddess Garden sunscreen, and it has helped me avoid a lot of burns.
But I get sloppy. I don’t reapply. Sometimes I don’t put any on at all and then stay out too long. Sometimes I miss a spot. At these times, I need a home remedy for sunburn. Stat. And my go-to? My lavender aloe burn spray.
Everyone knows that aloe is a must for burns. So soothing, it provides instant relief. But actually finding pure aloe vera gel? That’s a trick. Even the stuff labeled “100% pure” has colors and preservatives added. Hmmph. Your best bet is to grow an aloe plant and harvest it yourself. Those things cannot be killed and they help purify the air, so why not give it a try? If you aren’t up for that, I have found Lily of the Desert to be the best option. Plus it is the perfect consistency for this burn spray.
Lavender essential oil is the second ingredient in this home remedy for sunburn. It is incredibly soothing for irritated skin; it is always my go-to. I use about a 2% dilution in this recipe. High quality lavender essential oil is generally considered safe at higher dilutions if used for acute problems. With this dilution, I feel comfortable reapplying this spray as often as needed.
Remember: This burn spray is just for minor burns. If the skin is blistering or the person with the burn is experiencing any concerning symptoms, please call your doctor.

- Use distilled water to dilute the aloe to a thin consistency. It needs to pass through a spray nozzle. Your aloe may already be in enough.
- Combine all ingredients in a 2oz spray bottle (like these).
- Shake well to combine.
- To use: spray directly on the burn or irritated skin. Rub in if desired, but this is not necessary. Reapply as needed.
- Store in a cool, dark place.
