Yesterday was Mother’s Day, but I actually started writing this in response to a concert I went to on Friday.
It was a concert given by a Catholic artist, in a church, with a focus on mothers. It was a beautiful time and I was so overwhelmed by love for my mom, and for mom’s everywhere who live up their lives and their bodies to bring a child into the world.
And I’m pretty sure I have the greatest mom ever.
Starting when I was 13, my mom and I joined karate together. She says we used to fight all the time before that. I don’t remember that, but I do know that once we started karate, we could legally and safely hit each other. I’ve written before about how I think all girls should take karate.
My mom has always been incredibly supportive of my life choices. Whatever I wanted to do with my life, she believed in me that I could do it. She would always offer her help if she could. Even at times when I was nervous about how she would respond, she has never failed to tell me that she is proud of me. Whether it is getting engaged at 21, joining the church she left, or changing to a less secure life plan that doesn’t directly require my college degree, she always responded with love and support.
I love you, mom, for never wavering in that support.
And since graduating from high school, my mom has also been a friend. Every year since then, I’ve grown more and more excited when I get to visit home. When I get to eat my mom’s delicious food and stay up late with her drinking wine and talking about religion and relationships. I look forward to these evenings with my mom, and I’ve gained a lot of wisdom from her.
Thank you, mom, for everything that you have taught me, and for the foundation that you laid that has brought me to where I am now.
My mom has done so much for me, starting from when she first became pregnant, and I know that I can never thank her enough for everything.
